LIFE | Alcohol and I … the early years

Before we start can I just say it’s not big and it’s not clever to drink and get drunk … but let’s be fair it is bloody good fun!

I can remember my first experience with alcohol like it was yesterday …[ not including the Baby Cham mum used to let us have on special occasions and the glass of Sherry I had with my Grandad on Christmas Eve ] … it was actually 30-odd years ago!

Let me take you back. It was my first and only Jamboree [Brownie/ Guide/ Scout Camp] over in Luxemburg. I was only 13 ; I guess Mum and Dad thought I was in safe hands.

On our first night of freedom my friend Jackie [ lived next door but one, year older than me, pretty, big boobs, all the boys loved her] and I bought a bottle of Advocaat each . Luckily Jackie looked older than her years and like I said –  boobs. She got served.

Advocaat was thick and creamy like custard and I remember I didn’t really enjoy the taste. We hid in a bush just off camp and necked it all. Let’s just say half an hour later I had literally turned green and began throwing up. I was sent to bed … the Camp Leaders believing I had picked a bug up while travelling. [Face of an angel me …far too sweet and innocent to even consider I had been drinking ] Continue reading

Ladies that Lunch |Dine Sheffield …

Dine Sheffield 15th to 29th March 2018 – Celebrate dining in Sheffield with a fortnight of fantastic offers

It’s like music to my ears. You all know I’m happiest when I’m eating… and if you didn’t. I am.

Dine Sheffield is a flagship initiative for Sheffield BID’s Alive After Five strategy, which is helping to boost the economy by promoting a new early evening experience through retail, entertainment, food and drink.

Sounds good eh? …

From world cuisine to pub grub, café favourites and fine dining, some of Sheffield city centre’s favourite eateries have signed up to Dine Sheffield

With over 40 establishments getting involved there is surely something to cater for everyone’s palette.

‘The Ladies that Lunch’ [ Sue and I ] were given the opportunity to try one of the deals for ourselves.

We plumped for the ‘Two burgers for £15.00’ at The 8 Oz Burger Company . It’s a restaurant I’ve spotted a few times ; with its large glass frontage and warm glow resonating from within it looks inviting, somewhere I’d like to go. Plus I do love a good burger!

You know those voices I hear [occasionally] that whisper “try me, try me, you know you want too ” especially when I’m around cake they happen when I walk past here too.

Beauty | What’s in your makeup bag?

When Joanne from Opposable Thumbs recently did a blog post on what’s in her makeup bag she tagged a few of her fellow bloggers to join in. Of course I jumped at the the chance; nosy by name, nosy by nature. It’s something that fascinates me. What do ‘real’ people actually put on their faces?

How about you?

Do you want to see what’s in my makeup bag ?

Yes … great stuff please walk this way.

No … you have my permission to leave now

First up I just need to clarify I have loads of makeup in boxes scattered all around the bedroom. Tonnes of the bloody stuff. Drives the BF crazy.

I’ve not featured any eyeshadow palettes ; I apply eye shadow in the morning and leave the sets behind on my dressing room table. You can read all about my eye-makeup routine // HERE

I don’t wear foundation so there’s non of that featured either.

This is the [rather mucky …in need of a wash ] makeup bag I won. Yay go me. This is the one I carry around with me on a daily basis. This is the makeup I tend to wear most days; I use for touch ups when I’m out etc.

All these products have been bought by myself.

Ladies that Lunch | The New Lunchtime Menu at The Botanist, Sheffield

“The writer is a mysterious figure, wandering lonely as a cloud, fired by inspiration, or perhaps a cocktail or two.”

Cake, cocktails and good company are three things that make me happy.

I might not have got cake but I got the later two when I was invited along to The Botanist for a Bloggers Lunch earlier this week to sample the new lunch menu.

Cocktails for me came in the form of Gin & Rhubarb Old Fashioned , just the one as I was driving.

It came in a short glass with just a slice of lemon and ice for garnish and was extremely strong. It’s a cocktail I would order again without a doubt [ just not when I was driving !]

Good company came in the way of Rach [ my wingman ] and a group of lovely Sheffield bloggers and their plus ones. It was great to eventually meet some familiar faces.

Charity begins at home … Would you shop at a Charity Shop?

Losing mum to cancer has had a strange effect on us all. While in the most part it’s been bloody shit it has also brought out a positive, determined side in us. A can we do more?… Can we help? …Can we raise awareness?

Having experienced first hand the scale of this awful disease, the helplessness that we felt , its compelled us to want to do something worth while; try to give back.

I’m considering taking up running [ yes you heard correctly – sofa monster might move yet!? ] so that I can participate in a sponsored run next year.

The BF and I are constantly thinking of hair brain schemes to help fund raise.

Wing walking‘ has been mentioned a few times but having Cataplexy I doubt it would even get past Health & Safety! Thanks to my ailment I have terrible balance generally … never mind while walking on a chuffing planes wing!

By a weird twist of fate an opportunity arose for my BF to help out at a local Cancer charity shop for the next couple of week-ends. It won’t bring mum back unfortunately BUT it will help raise money for research and maybe, just maybe it will go towards preventing somebody having to through what we have, as a family,  in the future.

Every little helps …

It was his first day working there today , [no drunken Bank Holiday escapades for us] so I popped into see him earlier.

Lunch with Marco Pierre White …

Sometimes I have to pinch myself at some of the opportunities I’ve been given this year via my little blog.

I’ve appeared on local radio, attended some fabulous launches, had a makeover by one of Charlotte Tilburys top MUA and now I’ve got another goodie, and a first, to add to the list.

Can you imagine my surprise and delight when I received an email earlier in the week asking whether I would like to attend the new menu launch at Marcos New York Italian Restaurant in Sheffield and  wait for it … to meet Marco Pierre White in person.

I didn’t have to think about it for long!

So that’s where I tootled off too yesterday afternoon. I almost cancelled at the last-minute due to mums health taking a turn for the worse but even on her hospital sickbed she insisted that I didn’t cancel , that she’d be ‘ever so mad’ if I didn’t attend.

So not to disappoint her … and because I was really looking forward to it off I popped with my ‘ladies that lunch’ partner Sue as my plus one.

Wagamama Summer tasting…

My favourite type of invite normally involves food and drink, so when Wagamama in Meadowhall got in touch to see whether I’d like to give their new summer menu a whirl … I was like the cat that got the cream.

It also happens to be one of the Mr’s favourite eateries, so when I told him it was a plus one invitation and would he like to join me … we are like a couple of cats that had got the cream!

So off we popped earlier this week …

Walking back to happiness  …

I’ve rediscovered my love for walking and seen as I’ve stated several times [ on here] that this is the year I’m getting fit it couldn’t have come at a better time.

I’ve been  heading for Damflask Reservoir which can be found at Lower Bradfield, conveniently only a 5 minute drive from mine.

A little history if I may …

Damflask reservoir was constructed in 1867. It has a capacity of 1,123 million gallons and a maximum depth of 88 feet. [ though it’s very low at the moment ] Today it is also used by Sheffield rowing and sailing club and for fishing. Good trout I here.

It’s beautiful,my thinking place…  Continue reading
