He said what . . . ?!

I don’t really comment much on stuff that goes on behind ‘the scenes’  with TV personalities because we don’t know all the facts …. BUT I’ll say this because it hit a little nerve earlier & he did say what he said …

Middle class woman of a certain age have probably had enough of some middle aged men’s behaviour and found the courage to speak up at last. Because with age comes the courage to do so …

Certain People’s behaviour from years ago wouldn’t be accepted by today’s standards & it’s often used as an excuse. I worked for a predominantly male Design & Build company and the stuff I had to endure daily wouldn’t (I hope) happen today.

At the time (it was my first full time job , I was in my early 20’s ) I believed it to be normal behaviour & I didn’t really think anything about it – looking back the majority of the men in the office would be in big trouble today if it had .

I & the other ladies in the office were encouraged by our Manager to wear short shirts, low tops and killer heels when we had clients in and we were instructed to flirt and ‘look after’ them.

I’ve talked about it before but my boss made inappropriate proposals on various occasions. I was told it was ‘harmless’ office banter??

I came out relatively unscathed. If anything I gained a back bone , a feck you attitude AND obviously did non of the requested proposals . I took voluntary redundancy about 6 month’s after turning him down because I conveniently got demoted and work became unbearable for me. I ran out of there with a big fat pay cheque , my car and tried not to dwell on it too much ….

I now realise it wasn’t me that was the problem … it was the entitled middle aged men in powerful roles I worked for.

I am a working ( not middle ) class woman and I should have spoken up at the time but like many others out of fear of ‘whatever’ –  I didn’t.

However just because we didn’t it does not mean people should not be held to account. Some men in power have had it good for too long , abused their power and are now rightly – in my opinion – being held to account

X

Well said Tracey, I like you have been subject to the so called ‘harmless banter’. As a naive 18 year old, I was given the option on my very first shift in a bar job (which I was doing as a second job to try and earn enough money to save for a car) of painting the cellar or going to bed with the middle aged landlord. My horrified reaction caused much hilarity, and I (obviously) laughed along as you did then. Like you I’m glad that finally this behaviour is being called out – it’s taken too long 😔
