Homemade by Thelmas #ladiesthatlunch40

It’s been a shitty week and that’s putting it mildly.

We are still mid throws renovating the living-room / kitchen. It doesn’t appear to be progressing very quickly . Slowly but surely … but entering into pulling my hair out territory.

We’ve also acquired some mood lighting in the living room. My current mood is bad after losing the controller . For the past 48 hours its been flashing on and off red / green / blue. Its driving me slowly insane . From the main street we must look like the local ‘knocking Shop’.

We found Lola (one of my beautiful cats) dead at the side of the road on Wednesday. I was beyond devastated and still quite can’t believe she’s gone. She had been knocked over and it was fairly evident that she had died straight away.  The only comfort I take from it all is that she didn’t suffer.

We’ve buried her in the front garden, bought a little memorial stone from our local garden centre and a pretty pink kissing plant to place on the top. I can see ‘her’ from my bedroom window so I get to say good night to her every evening.

Life more or less returned to normal on Friday and despite the snow Sue and I met up for our weekly #ladiesthatlunch met up.

This week Sue suggested we go to Homemade by Thelma at Nether Edge. I had never been, or even heard of it before. Always keen to try new venues, that’s were we headed.

Its located at 4 Nether Edge Road , Sheffield S7 1RU and I’m informed by Sue its run by 2 sisters.

They serve a variety of deli sandwiches, salads and hot and cold daily specials. Gluten free , vegan and vegetarian are all catered for.

There’s also a full range of hot and cold drinks and delicious cakes.

Chicken and smoked cheddar cheese bagel with homemade coleslaw, gherkins and side salad – £5.50

Beverage wise I decided on a Cappuccino – £2.30 and Sue had a Hot Chocolate made with real chocolate drops – £2.40. She said it was overly sweet…that’s the chocolate drops for you!

For main course I ordered a chicken and smoked cheddar  bagel with side salad.

I think presentation is very important  (especially in the day and age of Instagram! ) it arrived in all its glory, beautifully presented.

It was quite lovely and left me feeling very satisfied. The filling was generous and came oozing out of the bagel.

The home-made coleslaw was exceptional and I always love some gherkin. It makes everything taste better. (Imagine your Big Mac without the gherkin? Unthinkable)

Sweet Potato and Coconut Soup with Warm Ciabatta – £4.00

Sue goes on holiday on Sunday and is trying to be good. (Aren’t we all? I keep telling myself I’m off to Marbella in 3 months while stuffing chocolate’s down my throat.)

She also wanted something light, so went for the Sweet Potato and Coconut Soup from the Specials Board..

It looked very hearty and welcoming and by all accounts tasted the same. It wasn’t steaming hot but not cold and in her words “just warm enough to enjoy.”

Drinks, main and then dessert ….

Chocolate Guinness Cake – to share

For dessert there was a choice of about 4 or 5 cakes, which our waitress ran through with us.

We decided on the Chocolate Guinness Cake which was nice but very, very rich. I wouldn’t have been able to eat a full piece to myself, and that’s coming from me a self-confessed piggy!

It is the  ideal sharing dessert … and only half the calories (YAY …think Marbella, think Marbella)

We ordered another drink (we both plumped for an Americano) and tucked in. Content and cosy , watching the snow falling outside.

The whole order came to just over £20.00 for the both of us  which I thought was very reasonable considering how much food and drink had been consumed.

It’s worth noting that every Friday evening Homemade by Thelmas opens for a Bistro evening. The premises are also available for hire (evenings only) please call 07710 272 413 to make any enquiries.

To summarise, if you are after a relaxed lunch with friends I would definitely recommend you pay a visit. There are no airs and graces, just lots of ‘yummy mummy’s’ and student types enjoying great food in simple surroundings.

After my awful week it was just what the doctor ordered…

We are always after new places to try …is there anywhere the #ladiesthatlunch should be heading?

Until next time, Tracey x

I’m so sorry to hear about your beloved cat. Two of mine died last year, within about two months of each other so I can totally empathise with you.
I loved the look of that dessert – I reckon I’d have given it a good go 😉

Thank you Suzy . It was an awful week and it’s really knocked my duck off. Frankie , her sister, seems to be coming round but was quiet for days.
